I'm mostly writing so that I remember to incorporate this into the project canon when the time comes, but anyway, Airikkala Island has relatively few non-avian dinosaur species, that's right on Airikkala there are no skrykes, no dune tyrants no serrat etc... Though it's not readily apparent because there is no scale bar on the island maps Airikkala is intended to actually be quite some distance off the coast of the main island (I really haven't worked out how big Araea actually is....hence my conscious decision to avoid adding scale bars for now)
While Agilisuchian crocodiles are successful on the main island they are still overshadowed by their dinosaurian cousins, on Airikkala the situation is reversed, with crocodilians having evolved to fill a profusion of niches. There are herbivorous crocs, shellfish-eating crocs, apex predator crocs etc.. Other widlife on Airikkala include a small number of non-avian dinosaur species, marsupials, seabird colonies, and the usual compliment of invasive species (particularly foxes and pigs).
Airikkala has a modestly sized human population and is governed by a self-styled "President" who aggressively maintains Airikkali sovereignity despite the risk of invasion by the Araean government. Most of the adult population is involved in some way in the island's "militia" - the Airikkala Defense Force. Agents claiming to act on behalf of Airikkali interests routinely to sow chaos in the streets of the larger cities (such as the bombing at MPA headquarters in A.C. 155) however their terrorist actions are always "officially denounced" by the de facto Airikkali government....but we know how that goes, I'm sure an investigation into where these "rogue agents" get their funding from would prove enlightening.
The insolent conduct of the separatist state is possible as they are able to hold the island's rich oil fields for ransom. Despite the hostility, Airikkala maintains oil exports to Araea however they are known to severely curtail supply when relations become especially frosty (Airikkali oil exports are currently reduced by 35% following an"incident" that occurred the previous year). Offloading the oil at Araean ports is a tense undertaking with ADF militia accompanying the oil tankers and the Araean army manning the docks, so the risk of a firefight is always present. As mentioned elsewhere, the Araean government is apparently fed up and seems to be prepping for a full scale assault on the island at an indeterminate point in the near future. The ADF, for their part, are tasked with destroying the oil wells at the first sign of an attack and are well trained in guerilla warfare.
