The Araean DRM-40 machine gun. Adaptable for infantry, tripod and vehicle use.
the "L" (Infantry) varient is the standard issue squad automatic weapon for Araean ground forces. It is also in use with Naval and Dirigible Corps units.
Like its contemporary the KG-35 rifle, the DRM-40 series were designed and first deployed for use during the latter years of the skryke wars. Being an air cooled design, the DRM-40 was something of a technological leap forward from the older machine guns in use at the time, which were water-cooled, exclusively tripod mounted models with limited mobility....not well suited to the frequently dynamic nature of combat against the skrykes.
While the Araean military has standardized the newer, smaller 5.9x43mm as a rifle caliber, there appears to be no such desire to adopt as smaller caliber machine gun as well. The DRM-40 is a robust, reliable design and is likely to remain in service for the forseeable future.
A large number are in use by the Airikkala Defense Force as well, where it fills the same roles as it does in the Araean army.
The Tengkorak syndicate has access to some heavy firepower and often customize it to suit their *errr..* unique operational requirements. Their modified DRM-40 is geared toward highly mobile running and gunning, drive by shootings, and portability, hence the short length and crude sidefolding metal stock (that given the Tengkorak's typical disregard for aimed fire, would likely remain folded during use anyway)
primary inspiration for this weapon's design comes from the RPD, PKM, and the Vektor SS-77 MGs
